Antigua

This English-speaking island was once Great Britain’s most important Caribbean outpost. Now, the coral reefs that attracted the Royal Navy make the island a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers, and the winding coastline features numerous secluded, sandy beaches. English Harbour and neighboring Shirley Heights are rich in landmarks that evoke the island’s colonial past.

Special Events

  • Antigua Sailing Week: English Harbour on the south-eastern coast of Antigua is the site of a restored British colonial naval station called “Nelson’s Dockyard” and is famous as an internationally acclaimed yachting and sailing destination. At the end of April and beginning of May, the annual Antigua Sailing Week commences with a world-class regatta.
  • Antigua Carnival: Antigua’s fun celebration on the streets of St. John takes place in late July or early August each year and brings out musicians, colorful dancers, and entertainers in elaborate costumes. Dating back to 1834, the 10- day Carnival event is a true tribute to Calypso music and the spirit of the Antiguan people.
